My name is Matt Foster (Mr. Foster), and I am an English teacher here at Clayton Valley Charter High School. I was born in Berkeley and raised in the Pleasant Hill/Walnut Creek area. I graduated from Northgate High School and received my B.A. in English from California State University, East Bay. I earned my teaching credential at St. Mary’s College of California.
While I always knew that education was my ultimate calling, I took a circuitous route in getting here. After high school, I played in a band and toured the United States, Japan, and Canada. But my passion for helping others led me to the field of emergency medicine; I spent three years as an EMT in Solano County. While that career was both riveting and rewarding, I still yearned for the field of academia and education. That yearning has brought me to where I am today.
In my free time I enjoy reading both fiction and history, playing the guitar, watching sports, biking, hiking and being outdoors, and writing both music and fiction. Most importantly, I enjoy my time with my wife and two sons.
I believe firmly that a good education is the pathway to many of the great things in life. Additionally, I believe that the classroom must be a safe, comfortable place with a strong sense of community, excitement, and wonderment. I believe in giving students autonomy and choices whenever possible.
