About Ms. Vivas

Welcome Parents and Students,

Hello, my name is Helen Vivas and this year I will be teaching biology, as well as, leading the team of Biology teachers. Additionally, this will be my first year as part of the engineering academy, which will consist of only engineering-oriented students (thrilled to have you!).

This page is NOT where I will be posting class materials/calendars/announcements etc. I use an interactive platform called Schoology. Schoology functions much like an academic Facebook where students can reply to posts that their peers or I make on our class page. They can also take quizzes, access extra copies of homework, provide me with awesome feedback, and set up appointments. It's also a prettier and more user-friendly platform. The sign-up process is catered to each class. You will get an email and a paper copy with directions concerning how to sign up. Please join us so I can keep you in the loop!

A little bit about me:
I grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and by middle school moved to downtown Chicago.  I attended the University of Chicago Laboratory schools from 4th grade to senior year of high school.  After high school, I was accepted to the University of Wisconsin- Madison where I majored in Biology/Zoology and minor in Chemistry.  My Junior year, I applied to the School of Education- Secondary Science education program and was accepted.  Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to teach science!  UW-Madison has one of the top-ranked Secondary Science education programs in the country- I was excited to be a part of it.
I currently hold a 6-12 science license/ credential in 3 states- Wisconsin, Illinois, and California.  I completed 2 years of student teaching in Madison, WI and taught 3 years in downtown Chicago and have taught at CV for 2 years.  I'm looking forward to learning more about CVCHS and becoming part of the Ugly Eagles family.

I'm looking forward to the 2018-2019 school year!
